“Grant me the serenity time accept a things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” -Serenity Prayer
The serenity prayer. Simple yet elegant, short and powerful, concise still dense. Much of the discontent in life comes from pushing against things unwanted. A dance of control, an attempt to tackle or restrain variables and fluctuations outside of a “normal” set deemed acceptable. Although, these often have a basis in familiarity as it relates to childhood and upbringing, they can develop at any time in life through habituation and unyielding routine. Think how freeing it is to ACCEPT the things you cannot change. ALL the things outside of my control, I can be at peace realizing acceptance rather than contention or worse, constant upset. Change can be scary, and in many ways burdensome. To the point that it often feels harder to change than to just stay the same. And, honestly, many folks do. However this prayer asks for COURAGE to change the things that we can. Those things big or small, mountain or mole hill, grant me the courageous spirit to make all the changes possible right now. In perfect harmony, the prayer ends asking for the WISDOM to know the difference; not knowledge, not the will of, NOT fate. Wisdom. The synthesis of personal experiences, knowledge, and good judgement. Allow me to live my life as me and through me and grant me the serenity to make all these things possible. Grant me the serenity, the peace of mind, to live life authentically, affectionately, purposefully, and fearlessly.
On this day, I will sit in meditation and repeat the serenity prayer as many times as FEELS right for me. Perhaps I am moved by it, or perhaps I come to believe. Maybe it is just a 1% shift; regardless I am better for it. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
